How long does bb need to sleep at night?

This is a question that has been bothering us for the past couple of days.

We are thankful that bb is able to sleep through the night without having to wake up for feed. So every night after we reach home which is about 8pm, we'll play with him until 9 plus, feed him and play with him somemore (cos he doesn't want to sleep yet) and give him the last feed at about 10 plus and prayerfully he'll sleep by 11pm. Usually, he'll knocked out by then and we'll have to wake him up in the morning around 6:15am to bathe, feed and get him ready to go to mu mum's place. So on average, he sleeps a good 7-hr stretch every night and maybe a bit more during Fri and Sat.

We learnt that a good long stretch of sleep at night is important for baby to develop well so lately we have been trying to adjust his clock such that he turns in earlier at night and/or wakes up later (which is still not very successful yet). We even considered letting my mum bathe him instead just so that he can catch more sleep. Wonder if that's necessary... really.

Guess we'll find our answer this friday when we bring bb to the polyclinic for his injection.

hi john and ivy,

i don't really have an answer to your question, but here's my personal experience: my baby keeps roughly the same hours - her last feed is sometimes as late as 1130pm. she's up at 7am, but i put her back to sleep after i feed her (because i'm still sleepy!) and she sleeps till 10am. i've tried putting her to sleep earlier (9 plus), but she then wakes up at 4, 5am because she's hungry. my mom says babies should sleep ten hours, but that's prob just a personal opinion. and there's no way my baby's able to sleep ten hours straight without a feed! so i suppose as long as she has a good morning nap she should be fine...

Hi Jas, I thought so too. Although baby wakes up early, he does catch up with his sleep after the morning feed. I guess so long he is happy, feeding, pee-ing and poo-ing well... it should be fine. :)
